Niobe. billed as "All Smiles" at the Columbia Theater this week bears out its name admirably. There have been few opportunities In town, for a long time, to get more hearty. Imiirha in nnfl ovpnln? Tt f lpiHHmntiv clean-cut farce-comedy, 'capitally done by a splendid stock company, brisk in every line, beautiful as to setting, rollicking and entertaining from first to last. The ground work of tne play is the 6tatue of Niobe, taken by Miss Countiss with rare good taste and discernment. realizing before us the excrutiating pre dicament tearful Niobe of mythological renown would be in, were she to come to life in a modern drawing-room, and make love to the old man of the house. Mr. Dills is the old man in question, and this natural and popular comedian makes the very most of a particularly hilarious part. Mr. BoUps is the owner of the statue and naturally is prominent. Miss Angus has a telling part as the old maid 8lster-ln-law. Miss Brandt is fetching In etanter as the mischievous daughter of the family. Mr. Baume, the leading man of tho company, graciously steps aside this week in a less conspicuous role, prob ably because he has well earned a week's respite, as he has borne the brunt of the jaau nor, tcvciiu iciuu5 feiis. j ne people line xiODe, .miss uountiss looks very lovely as the statue, and makes the conception an extremely poetic and sustained piece of artistic portrayal. The farce Is Indeed worth seeing. It will run all this week. "A Romance of Coon Hollow." "A Romance of Coon Hollow" is one of the largest dramatic companies on the roau. oeaiues tne imc scenery ana a strong company. The troupe carries a band of colored boy buck dancers and quartet, that are hard to beat. The original production is presented at Cor- dray a this week. The comedy Is a story something on the lines of "In Old Ken tucky." The characters are skillfully drawn ana are interpreted, by a com- pany which receives praise all along the line. COMING ATTRACTIONS. Warde-Kidder Sale Today. This morning at 10 o'clock .the advance sale of 6eats will open for Frederick "Warde and Kathryn Kidder, who come to the Marquam Grand Theater next Thurs day, Friday and Saturday nights, Octo ber 6. 7, 8, with a special matinee Satur day, in the elaborate spectacular drama. "Salammbo." "Salammbo," as presented by Managers agenhals & Kemper, con- fists of Ave acts and six scenes, and all of them are said to vie with tho best scenes in "Ben Hur' and other famous spectacles of late years. A brilliantly costumed ballet, the varied uniforms of ancient armies and a melodious strain of barbaric music which runs throughout the play enhance the general effect. The au thor Is Mr. Stanislaus Stango, who earned so much fame for his dramatization of "Quo "Vadis?" Ralph-Stuart at the Marquam. Ralph Stuart, one of the greatest favor ites that ever trod the boards in Port land, will be seen next Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday matinee and night, October 10, 11 and 12 at the Marquam Grand Theater in his magnificent romantic production of "By Right of Sword." AT THE VAUDEVILLE THEATERS The Star. Daring and clever acrobatic work Is suuMn uy ujo mree rorresi marveis ax I ine star mis weeK. The orrests are top-liners, two men and a vounir worn- an, all models training, and it is interesting to -watch jiow tncy an wont togciner ana at tne rsame time. One of the young men has IrlUS, AUS; h ? , nnvno ui the trapeze while he swings the two other performers as if they were feather-weights. Tho single casting I act, as It Is professionally called, is watched in breathless silence. The team is a flrst-class one. Every time little Miss Kramer, she with the as- sumed Bowery gait ana runny teeth. makes a joke, something about her says: "Toot, toot." She Is a very com ical girl, and sho and her partner earn many a hearty laugh by their songs. "The Bowery Queen . and Barney. Two little girls, tho Downeys, have beautiful voices, soprano and contralto. and they made hits with: "I'm "Wearing -Mv- u.,rr A-tcnt- Vnr V "Tv,t My Heart Away For You," and "The Village by the Sea." Clifford EskelL ma gician, comes straight from the great Harry Rickards show In Melbourne. Australia, and is well dressed, clever and a good talker. Bell and Dalton, German comedians and Will a Hoyt, in a new song, make good. One of the hits in the projectoscope display is the illusion "Rock of Ages. The Lyric. So many different sounds came from the Liyric stage when Rafel, the ven triloquist. was doing his turn, that it was difficult to believe that several peo ple were not helping him. His dolls seemed to have minds, speech and live muscles of their own, and they even got Into a vocal conflict, so clever Is Rafel's work. The vitascope flashes stirring war pictures of events that are taking place in Manchuria, In which ftuss and Jap aru the principal actors, and the contribu tlon is both entertaining and timely. Anyone who has' heard Worfleld and RoseJn. 278 RasccU. Phase East IMS. Tint "Walsh makes a fine appear- qjqq ring work being worth seeing. Hattie Wade Mack has been much her- aided in advance as a character come- dienne, and she is worth all the good things that one can say about her. She caused many a laugh by her faithful im- personations, many of them true to life, Bowen and Mass are clever dancers, and earned their share of the applause going around. The whole programme Is en- tertainlng. The Arcade. .-.- v,H th. t -QI1Paorv rr- forraed one trick on the Arcade stage yesterday than he had the people with him.
